Sunday Morning
I think this is officially the longest I've gone without posting in years. And I haven't even been on vacation! I've been working and rehearsing. That basically sums up my life the past couple of weeks. Oh, and I've been running. The Indy Mini-Marathon is in five weeks. I was supposed to run an 8K today called The Shamrock Shuffle. It's a big Chicago tradition. It was thundering and snowing when I woke up this morning. So I just turned over and went back to sleep. It's too dangerous to run in the slush and snow when I have a race coming up. I'm not broken-hearted about it. I got the free t-shirt.
Last night I had a Playground show. Since everyone was supposed to be taking part in "Earth Hour" we decided to celebrate it with our show. In case you haven't been connected with the real world, it's when everyone is supposed to turn off their lights for an hour last night from 8:30 - 9:30. I, of course, accidentally left on a lamp in my apartment. I don't like coming home alone to a dark apartment. So, there went that idea.
What was I talking about? Oh yes, our show. We decided to have all the lights turned off to perform the show. This is normally called a "Bat" - when you can't see anything on stage and you have to listen. It's a fun form. We decided to all bring flashlights and create our own lighting. It was pretty cool. Some of our scenes suffered because of it, but some really came together. I don't know if the audience liked it, but we thought it was pretty interesting and created interesting atmospheres and situations. I'd totally do it again. This time we will at least have an idea of what we're doing instead of discussing it as we warm up in the theatre bathroom five minutes before our show. That's improv. And I love it.
Hope your day is much sunnier and warmer than ours here in Chicago. I did watch a movie with the rooommates. Happy-Go-Lucky. It was a cute/interesting movie. I was just happy to be relaxing and not running off somewhere.

Human Knot
Last night at rehearsal for The Senate, we played a few warm-up/group-mind games. One of them was the ol' human knot game. You stand in a circle and grab someone's hand with your right hand and another person's hand with your left hand. Then you have to work silently to untangle the knot. I've done this about 1,000 times - and that was at camp. No telling how many more times I've done this with improv groups. I'm 32 and still playing the human knot game. I love it.
At one point I found that it was my turn to cross over a sea of clasped hands. People bent down so you could climb over their arms and reach the other side. The problem is that your butt usually ends up in someone's face. I silently regretted not wearing a belt. As I crawled over the arms and hands, a few came precariously close to...you know...we'll call it "ground zero." My only thought was, "why oh why of all days did I have to start my period today."

Show Saturday Night!
The Senate is playing tomorrow night, June 14th at The Playground. 8:00 p.m. BYOB. $10 for three great groups. Our group is incredibly talented and I love performing with them. Don't miss out!
And in other fun news...I get to go see Glen & Marketa, the peeps from Once, in concert Sunday night at the Chicago Theatre!!! I'm going to work really hard to not sing along. There's nothing worse than a tone deaf person singing next to you at a concert. One of the best things about a U2 concert is that they play so loud you can't hear anyone singing next to you. I wonder what it would sound like if they suddenly turned off the sound and you heard everyone belting out the songs.

Until Next Week
Here are a few updates from my life:
1. Fabulous fun wedding in Austin this weekend. I'm leaving tonight, but more on that later.
2. I had TWO fantastic On Camera classes these past two weeks. I performed two dramatic scenes: one from A League of Their Own (thank God she cast me in Gina Davis' role and not Rosie O'Donnell's. Had it been the opposite I would have wired my mouth shut) and another from some random movie about Richard Speck called Moment of Rage. I got kudos for both! It felt unbelievably amazing to feel like you nailed both scenes. I wish I could post the scenes online, but I most likely will never see them again. boo.
3. Last night's show with The Senate had a scene that we labeled "Supermarket Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle." It was so utterly random (like the rest of the show) and I loved it. I was in love with a man who thought he was a Ninja Turtle. It was beautiful really.
I should be thrilled that I'm not flying American tonight. I should also be thrilled that I'm not flying out of O'Hare. It is a rainy mess in Chicago and my hope that I'll fly out on time...or even tonight...is dwindling. Why so negative, Katy? I don't know, maybe it's because the periodical hit today.
The GOOD news is that I'm flying to Austin for my cousin, Alyse's wedding. I love family weddings because my family is so fun to be around. Our love for each other is equivolent to the thought of standing on a beach and holding hands around a campfire singing Kumbiah.
I'll also be spending time with Katherine and Jennie from college and Kellsey from high school. I CAN'T wait!

Real Life at IHOP
Rehearsal for The Senate last night tested my boundaries and pushed me way outside my comfort zone. That's why I felt so exhilarated after I walked away!
Six of us were available to rehearse last night. Instead of our normal coach, we had a guest coach who was fantastic. As soon as we walked up he said, "I cancelled your room. We're going to do improv in the real world." Immediately my stomach turned as I thought about how I was probably going to have to make an ass out of myself in front of "real people." The stage is much more comfortable than real life.
He issued us three challenges:
Challenge 1 - We had fifteen minutes to go off by ourselves and do anything to get a stranger to compliment us. We couldn't ask "hey, like my jacket?" or anything similar. I saw the Starbucks immediately and thought, "they love to give compliments!" Disclaimer: I had just started my period and contemplated just sitting on a bench in the fetal position. Instead I flashed my biggest smile and gave a very friendly performance. Nothing. "I went to the dentist today." BLING! (big fat smile) Nothing. Obviously my charm wasn't working. I walked a loop around the block smiling at everyone I saw. Nothing. If I hadn't been in Boys Town, I'm pretty sure I would have gotten a date out of it.
Two out of the six were successful. Matt made up a story that he was going to see a girl he knew from college and hadn't seen in a year and was nervous. He got two compliments right away. Oh, we can make up stories? But I don't like to "play" with real people who don't know they're playing a game.
Challenge 2 - We paired up and had 15 minutes to get a stranger to console or comfort us three times. Tim, who was even more petrified by this exercise than me, was my partner. We walked a few blocks and finally zeroed in on a couple standing by their car waiting for someone. I said, "Hi, I locked my keys and my cell phone in my apartment. Can I please user your phone to call my roommate?" They were really friendly, but slightly distracted. I called my own cell phone - thank goodness it was on silent - and left a message for myself - "Hey Katy, it's me." It's funny. I still have it. We got a "poor thing" and a "good luck!" Good enough for us.
Challenge 3 - The final challenge! We split up into couples again. Paul and I were couple #1. We each were given a piece of paper with a motivation written on it. We couldn't share that piece of paper with anyone; especially our partner. We walked to IHOP and our coach went in first. He took a seat so he would be able to watch all of us. Our assignment was to assume this character choice as soon as we walked through the doors. We went in one couple at a time and took different seats around IHOP. We ordered some drinks and just improvised conversation using our motivations.
My motivation read: "You don't want to be with him. You can't stand this relationship anymore and want to end it. Decide how badly you want to hurt him and then leave forever." Ouch. Pretty quickly I figured out that his was that he loved me. We sat down in a booth and our conversation turned heated pretty quickly. We spoke in normal speaking voices but there were a couple tables around us that couldn't stop staring at us. It was hard to stay focused knowing people really thought we were in an argument. It was fun to come up with a back story as we began talking. There were things like, "you've been gone for nine months. You asked me to move with you to Chicago and then you leave for weeks at a time on these business trips." "I am seeing your old roommate." "I moved out two weeks ago." And in the end it crescendoed with an "I don't think I ever loved you. You're an asshole." And then I stormed out! It was fabulous! When would I ever do that in real life? I hope never.
Our coach said that there were tables who couldn't pay attention to their own conversations and were straining to listen to us. HILARIOUS! The servers got a nice tip before we left...and a few stories to keep them going through the night. At least I wasn't a couple that had to pretty much make out. I would have died.

Stop, Collaborate and Listen
Two amay-mayzing things happening tonight:
1) Lunar Eclipse. I don't want to miss this one. It's a full lunar eclipse y'all. I'll take any chance I can get to howl at the moon and beat my chest (though not hard because I'm experiencing some tender warriors at the moment. Do I need to spell it out for you? Okay - PMS).
2) The Senate. We're performing tonight at The Playground (Halsted & Belmont) at 8:00 p.m. $10 and BYOB. Be there....and then go watch the lunar eclipse. I'm thinking the eclipse should be in full glory between 9:00 and 10:00 p.m. (central time).

House of Crazy
Friday night was the big REBIRTH sketch performance at the House of Blues. It was quite surreal performing in a venue that's played host to so many great musical artists. Armed with a keyboard, lapel mic's and killer wit we took to the stage. I can't say that I was overly impressed with our performance on Friday. It was a difficult venue to perform sketch but I am so glad that we did it. I learned so much about the process and now we have a great show we can perform elsewhere.
The best part of the night was the crowd of friends and family that came to support us. Half my office attended as well as other people who are so loving and supporting of me. We had more fans than any band that performed that night. And we needed them! The bar scene can be an unfriendly place to bare your artist soul.
It really is a miracle that this performance happened at all. We found ourselves on the street corner by Ashley's apartment warming up in the cold air. Jason was frantically teaching Devin how to play our songs on the keyboard while we rehearsed our lyrics. I'm surprised we didn't make any money from pedestrians passing us while we played. After racing to the House of Blues and hoping to make it in time to get the mic's hooked up and ready they showed us to the "rehearsal area." This "rehearsal area" happened to be a stairwell behind the kitchen. We crammed into a corner and tried to remember our tops & bottoms while servers and tech people ran up and down, in and out of the stairwell. It was too chaotic to really get nervous.
It was a crazy night but one that I will remember forever. Sure makes you appreciate those smaller theater houses that respect the artists on stage. Would I do it again? Sure, why not!?

House of Blues Show
There are exciting things happening in the great city of Chicago! Namely, I'm performing at the House of Blues with my sketch/improv group, REBIRTH! We'll put up a 40 minute sketch show that's sure to get a laugh or two or three. I even sing in it! Now that's funny. Here are the details:
When: Friday, December 15, 2006
Time: 9:00 p.m.
Location: House of Blues, Chicago
Cost: $10.00
If you would like to attend you can buy tickets from these two website: House of Blues or Ticketmaster. See our name in lights! And no, Al Roker's XXXLMAS show is not pornographic.
But speaking of porn....
Monday morning I arrived back at the office after a long holiday weekend to an email saying that I had attached a porn video to the mass email I sent out a few days earlier. WHAT?!!!! I sent out a mass email to 1,500 donors saying Thank You and Happy Thanksgiving! Little did they know what Thanksgiving treat they'd be getting from us. I was HORRIFIED to say the least. I mean, in someone's eyes my name will always be associated with porn. Thankfully only one woman had opened the attachment and seen it. Apparently it was a virus that attached itself to this mass email and it was undetectible to our system. Classic!
So be careful of opening any presents from me. You just never know what I might send you.

It's Official
I just received this email today from Second City.
Katy:
Thanks for participating in the annual Touring Company Understudy Auditions. We enjoyed meeting you and we hope you enjoyed playing with us. Although there is not a position available for you currently, we look forward to seeing you in auditions next year.
Oh, yes, you will see me next year! And next year you're going to want me!

Week Worth Mentioning
This week was jam packed with events and non-events.
First, I had my Second City Touring Company understudy audition. It went okay. It wasn't spectacular and it wasn't horrible. It was just kind of...eh. But I'm glad I did it and I can't wait to do it again!
Second, I missed two days of work due to illness. I finally went to the doctor and he gave me a strep test. My throat was raw, soar, swollen and covered with white dots. A sign of strep? That's what I thought. When the test came back negative the doctor said it was just Post-Nasal Drip and that I should just take some Benadryl. All that for POST-NASAL DRIP!??? Well, at least I got caught up on my sleep and am feeling a wee bit cabin feverish.
Finally, when I returned home from the doctor, my roommate said that we had had a visitor. This woman claimed she was from the projects and had been receiving my mail occasionally. She refused to give it to my roommate because I wasn't home and she asked for a reward. UMMMM, a REWARD???? First of all, don't come to my house! Secondly, it's called good citizenship. Thirdly, do what we all do, put "Return to Sender" on it or "Wrong Address." I wouldn't be too upset but one of the envelopes has a check in it. The check has since been cancelled. The woman called last night and said she was on her way again to give me my mail. I just asked her not to come over but instead to take it to the post office. She then proceeded to ask for a reward. I did what the post-office told me to do....I said no. This whole thing makes me nervous.
Anyway, I just took an anti-histamine and now I have the shakes. What a week!

I'm going to stop at 50. I think that's a good number. I am blessed beyond words and comprehension. So much can happen in three years. I took a risk by leaving everything I knew and look how much I've been able to do with my life. Three years passed by so quickly. I wouldn't change a thing. I want to make the most of the time that I have here.
I know that there are many things that I've failed to mention or momentarily forgotten. Please feel free to add any memories you've had with me over the last three years. I'd love to hear them!

Opening Night
Tonight's the night! It's not actually THE opening night. It's more MY opening night. I need to go home and take a big fat nap before the big midnight show. I'm afraid I won't be performing as a whole and complete person. I'll be performing as a woman who is shy three moles and sporting numerous stitches. I'll try to work that into my character. Let's hope her biopsy doesn't show cancer.
