...Because only athletes get these injuries, right? After seeing my doctor (who I LOVE) today, I found out there are some significant things happening. Some of you may not know that I've been struggling with a knee injury for the past few months and just had an MRI on my knee and back. That's fun when you're claustrophobic. Please read that as sarcasm. This injury makes it hard to walk even four blocks. Two and a half months of physical therapy didn't really do the trick.
So in a nutshell:
1. I have a torn meniscus in my left knee that's 7mm long. She says it's pretty big and that they need to try and repair it if possible. If they can't, they'll cut it???
2. I have no cartilage on the outside of my knee. She says I'm pretty young to have this but it's probably because of my past injury. Three cheers for 9th grade basketball! They are going to first try to do some surgery they use on professional athletes where they drill holes in the bone and allow stem cells to grow (Microfracture?). This is usually 85% successful. If it doesn't work, we'll go about another route with a different surgery.
3. Both these surgeries can be done at the same time and I'll need to be on crutches for a month (dear Lord help me!). The good news - I'm getting it done and I'll be back to myself in a few months. Woohooo!
4. I have a bulging disc in my back pressing on the nerve root which shoots pain down my leg and to my knee. So I'm seeing a back doctor on Monday and they may give me an injection. No surgery and it isn't too bad. It's probably from compensating for my knee (Which I knew. I could be a doctor). We'll see what her colleague says. She wants to get this taken care of first before surgery.
I'm a mess. But at least there are answers. I told her I was afraid I'd go in there and she'd tell me there's nothing wrong. It was the opposite - I have multiple things wrong which explains SO MUCH! Like why I can't walk without wanting to rip my left leg off. I'll admit that I cried after I left and called Mom. I'm not sure why. Maybe a bit of relief knowing what it is and that there's hope for healing. Maybe a bit of sadness that the summer will be about rehab. In the end I will get better and will eventually be able to run along the lake again.

Bum Leg
You know what's the most comfortable shoe ever? Uggs? No, Uggs with orthodics.
I've become an orthodic wearing woman. Long gone are the days of sassy heels (except for that awesome pair I just secured this past weekend) and the ease of flip flops. Under orders from my physical therapist I am imprisoned in shoes that can house orthodics. Hello Easy Spirit.
I'm a 33 year-old orthodic wearing woman who decides on lunch-time restaurants by debating if she can walk to them without any pain or not. How can I be so young and have such issues with my left leg? Addiction to running, so you would think. It's most likely because I walk funny. What originally started out as knee pain is now knee pain, hip-flexer pain, and a new flare up in my calf. I should just go purchase a Rascal so I can live life or at least walk down to the bus stop.
It's really done a number on me. You know I love training for marathons, half-marathons, triathlons, etc. I love pushing myself while working out with my trainer. It's been humbling not being able to do anything. I prided myself on being in shape and being the first person in my apartment up and out the door running along the lake. I went through a mourning stage, then denial, then mourning again, and now I'm at acceptance.
I'm praying that we can figure things out while my insurance is still covering my physical therapy visits. No one can figure me out. I always liked being unique, but not like this.
At least it's winter and I can hide my orthodics in most of the shoes I wear. What if it were summer? I'd be the one wearing shorts, mid-calf high socks, and some awesome khaki colored sneakers. Game of shuffle-board anyone?

Running Photos
I just received my half-marathon pictures through email this morning. Pictures of me running should never be taken. They should all be burned! Who wants to see their butt swaying this way and that? Who wants to see the skin on their face flying up and down? "Why do I keep my head pulled back?! I have a weak chin!" Plus I just look tired, sweaty and red-faced.
The final picture of me, Adrienne and her friend is actually good. I'd had about an hour to cool down.
Not feeling remotely sexy after seeing those pictures. Tyra! You need to do an episode on these kinds of photos.

Sunday Morning
I think this is officially the longest I've gone without posting in years. And I haven't even been on vacation! I've been working and rehearsing. That basically sums up my life the past couple of weeks. Oh, and I've been running. The Indy Mini-Marathon is in five weeks. I was supposed to run an 8K today called The Shamrock Shuffle. It's a big Chicago tradition. It was thundering and snowing when I woke up this morning. So I just turned over and went back to sleep. It's too dangerous to run in the slush and snow when I have a race coming up. I'm not broken-hearted about it. I got the free t-shirt.
Last night I had a Playground show. Since everyone was supposed to be taking part in "Earth Hour" we decided to celebrate it with our show. In case you haven't been connected with the real world, it's when everyone is supposed to turn off their lights for an hour last night from 8:30 - 9:30. I, of course, accidentally left on a lamp in my apartment. I don't like coming home alone to a dark apartment. So, there went that idea.
What was I talking about? Oh yes, our show. We decided to have all the lights turned off to perform the show. This is normally called a "Bat" - when you can't see anything on stage and you have to listen. It's a fun form. We decided to all bring flashlights and create our own lighting. It was pretty cool. Some of our scenes suffered because of it, but some really came together. I don't know if the audience liked it, but we thought it was pretty interesting and created interesting atmospheres and situations. I'd totally do it again. This time we will at least have an idea of what we're doing instead of discussing it as we warm up in the theatre bathroom five minutes before our show. That's improv. And I love it.
Hope your day is much sunnier and warmer than ours here in Chicago. I did watch a movie with the rooommates. Happy-Go-Lucky. It was a cute/interesting movie. I was just happy to be relaxing and not running off somewhere.

Note to Self #43
When preparing for a five mile race, actually do some preparation. Otherwise you're destined to feel like you've been hit by a truck. Then you'll find yourself lying on the couch for seven hours straight watching Ben Kingsley's Academy Award winning role in Gandhi. During intermission you'll decide that you do indeed need to take an intermission, so you eat a huge pizza meant for two people and then nap for two hours. Later you'll wake up a groggy mess and wonder what day it is and if you've slept through the night and forgot to go to work. When the panic subsides, you'll have enough energy to do two loads of laundry and consume a healthy dinner made up of leftover chocolate cake from a birthday party your roommate threw for her sister-in-law. Coming down from the sugar high you'll then watch yet another movie. It's well worth it since it's a Wes Anderson film. Minutes will be lost as you daydream about what it would be like to be one of Wes Anderson's friends and get to be in all his films. During this lovely daydream, you'll walk into your room and slip into bed. While sliding, you'll think to yourself, "I really must shave tomorrow."

Considering it took 20 minutes to even get to the start line and we still were weaving in and out of the crowd after two miles, I think we had a fast race.
I finished 14,022 out of 30-35,000 runners. Not too shabby! :-)

Indy Mini Pictures
It was awesome! On my way down to Indianapolis I called my friend, Adrienne, who grew up in Indy and now lives in L.A. I just called to say I was thinking of her and would have loved it if she was in town so I could see her. It has been five years since we last saw each other. She called me right back to tell me that she was in Indy and running the half marathon too! We ended up meeting before the race and ran it together. I've decided that I'm going to sign up for every race with a friend I haven't seen in years. It makes the race so fun and makes it go by so quickly. We talked about everything from laser hair removal (a favorite topic) to marriage. She is also trying to make it as an actress in the big world. It was great to talk with someone who is experiencing what I'm experiencing. Two hours and 19 minutes later we were finished. I'm hardly even sore! The only way to celebrate a race is to drink margaritas...huge margaritas. I ended up staying in Indianapolis another night. It was the laziest saturday I've experienced in months...minus the whole half-marathon part.
It was the most organized race I've ever run and I will definitely sign up for next year. Hello! We got to run on the Indy 500 track!
So thanks everyone for the encouraging texts and calls during the race. I felt very loved and encouraged! Come run it with me next year!

Indy Mini-Marathon
I leave in less than three hours to drive to Indianapolis for the half marathon! I'm scared. I need to remember just to have fun and to really enjoy these two hours and 20 minutes of running. Yeah.
The race starts at 6:30 a.m. central time. I should be finished around 9:00 a.m. at the latest if all goes well. I'll be carrying my phone. Feel free to text any encouraging words or you can even call me. I've been known to answer it when in need of a pep talk. I have a feeling I'll need one.
And say a prayer too for the ol' hamstring. It's been doing much better but I haven't tested it out on 13.1 miles yet.
But how lucky am I that I get to challenge myself like this?! I need to remember that around mile nine when I don't know if I can go much further.
Tonight I'll probably have my typical pre-marathon dream. I dream that I've run the race and I wake up realizing I still have to do it. It's like running two marathons in less than 24 hours.

Pulled a Hammy
What 31 year old in her right mind agrees to pop into the splits at the end of a dance routine? Apparently me. I was a gymnast for eight years and cheered in high school for a couple of years. In other words, I'm flexible. I'm pretty impressed with the flexibility that remains as the toe touches and splits become less frequent...and there's the fact that I'm getting older. I am getting...just say it...olllllderrrrr. Ugh. The pulled hammy basically sealed that deal.
Rehearsal last night was one of the more hilarious rehearsals I've ever experienced. I showed up and they told me to make up a dance and teach it to them right then and there. Ooookay. I busted out every cheesy, raunchy dance move I could think of at the time. I don't know if the audience will laugh as hard as we did last night but I'm thinking it might be a hit...or a cringer; you just don't know.
I'll post a few pictures that were taken when I upload them from my camera.
And the reason that a pulled hammy is so sad? I'm supposed to run a half-marathon in 10 days. Pray y'all. PRAY!

Ready to Run
Jessie and Janell gave me the perfect birthday gifts. I guess living with someone for three years gives you a good idea of who they are, what they want and what they need. They know me so well! It's kind of scary.
Janell got me a year long subscription to Blockbuster online rental. It's like Netflix but you can actually go to the store! It's only $9.99 a month. Now if I could just make the time to watch a movie! My roommates claim that this is a present for me but everyone wins with it. Little do they know that I like really cheesy dance movies or foreign flicks that make you go "huh?" Well actually they do know because they've lived with me for so long.
Jessie knows I'm in training for a half-marathon this coming May. I'm a little behind in my training because of a severe case of laziness but I think I'm back on track! I've completed all my scheduled runs so far this week! AND I did the Chicago Shamrock Shuffle and didn't die! Tangent. Anywho, Jessie got me the new Nike + ipod thing for the shoe. I'm so excited to use it. Apparently at the end of a really long run Lance Armstrong will come on and congratulate you. The next best thing to that would be having the actual Lance Armstrong running with me. It would be a win win for both of us. He could cheer me on and I could make him laugh.
Because I do not wear Nike's when I run I just went online and bought this nifty little clip for it. I think I'll like it. I chose pink because I like the color. And of course I support Breast Cancer research! And it reminds me I'm a girl when I'm all salty and sweaty from running.
What are my running shoes of choice? I run in the Mizuno Wave Inspire shoe. They are light, supportive and don't cut too high on my cankles. I actually don't have cankles but I love the word. Cankles. See? It's great! I'm in need of a new pair if anyone wants to spring for them for me. I wear an 8.5 in women's. That's an 8.5 in a running shoe. Should you want to buy me these, I'll take them in an 8.

Happy Birthday Dad!
My dad turns 62 today and I want to wish him a great Big HUGE HAPPY BIRTHDAY! He told me today that he doesn't deserve me and I told him right back that I don't deserve him! I am truly blessed to be the daughter of such a great man. I know that there are plenty of people out there wishing they could be his daughter. He's so good to his family! He's so good to me!
My 62 year old dad is planning on running the 8 mile Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving. I'm hoping to run the 3! He also ran a half marathon when he turned 60. He had so much fun after that one that he decided to run a couple more. He loves fly-fishing, tennis and continues to perfect his golf game. He constantly looks for ways to help other people who are hurting and in great need. He loves the arts, a good joke (and some bad ones) and probably wishes he could be a sports caster. He's my dad!
I love you dad!
